Biography

Stephanie Atwood is currently head coach and founder of the women’s running/walking group in the greater Bay Area called Go WOW Team and recently started a national program called Go WOW Living. Her training and teaching experience go back more than three decades.

Stephanie is a best selling author as well, with books focused on running, nutrition, and overall good health and wellness.

Stephanie completed her first long run as a student with Outward Bound. The Outward Bound experience changed her life. Running has been a constant part since then.

In the 70’s she was an avid rock climber and mountaineer and was one of the original team of women chosen to climb Annapurna in the Himalaya. She has made a number of first all-female ascents.

Stephanie was originally trained by the “Focus on Fitness” Program founded by none other than Bill Graham in the 70’s and has worked and volunteered in fitness-related programs including marathon training, boot camps, teaching x-country skiing, winter survival, rock climbing, mountaineering, white water rafting, and adventure hiking throughout the world.

Stephanie and partner started an adventure travel business “Guides For All Seasons” in 1978. They arranged and led clients on adventure trips all over the world including Nepal, Switzerland, Japan, Kenya, and Antarctica. She has climbed Mt. Fuji more than a dozen times!

A teacher and trainer at heart, Stephanie’s undergraduate degree was in “experiential education” and her M.A.in cross cultural business communications. She is certified as a long distance running coach, personal trainer and consults in sports nutrition and injuries. Her experience as trainer, team builder, entrepreneur, and educator spans many years and many situations. She has worked with all ages and kinds of groups including 7 years as senior instructor with Outward Bound and more than 2 decades as an international outdoor adventure guide and business owner. She has led the Sierra Club Winter Outing Program and taught winter survival and cross country skiing along with competing in long distance x-country ski racing.

Presently, Coach Stephanie is a Master’s Runner and runs or walks almost every day. She often places in the top 3 in her age division.

Running and I go together. I want it to be that way as long as I live.

Movement and fitness is a gift. I encourage both. When we’re moving, we’re getting fit. It doesn’t matter how fast we’re doing it!
